MURREY

by Dexter Sinister, New York/ USA

In heraldry, tincture refers to the use of color in the design of Coats of Arms. Specific designs often had to be communicated using black and white drawing alone. In the absence of true color representation, a coded system of line hatching was developed that could easily distinguish one tincture from another. Each tincture had a proper heraldic name: GULES (red), SABLE (black), OR (gold), VERT (green), PURPURE (purple), ARGENT (white), MURREY (dark red), TENNE (light red)' SANGUINE (blood red)

The designers Dexter Sinister have produced patterns inspired by these tincture hatches. Each pattern borrows its title from the corresponding color within the Heraldic color pallet. This pattern is MURREY (dark red).
